Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda / 2016 / 117 min
(Japanese language with English subtitles)

Ryota, a once-promising writer who achieved a prestigious award fifteen years ago, remains obscure. He takes pride in being a man of letters. However, having become addicted to gambling, he always has a thin purse and begs his mother and sister for money.

In exchange for meeting his only child, Shingo, once a month, Ryota has to pay his ex-wife child support. In an effort to display his fatherliness, he brings a present for Shingo at every opportunity, even when he has no money for his ex-wife. In an unexpected turn of events, one stormy summer night he takes shelter at his mother's home with his family, where he attempts to assert himself as a father and establish a firm presence in Shingo's life.

A human drama depicting people living in the moment after their lives have taken a different course from what they had envisaged in their dreams.
